Location: The Tohono O’odham reservation consists of four separate pieces of land that make up the Tohono O’odham Nation. These pieces of land are the “main” reservation, Florence Village, San Xavier and San Lucy. The land lies in three counties of the state of Arizona: Pima, Pinal and Maricopa counties. The main reservation is located between Tucson and Ajo, and the San Xavier District just south of Tucson. In Maricopa County, the San Lucy District reservation is located north of Gila Bend and a small portion of Hickiwan District and Sif Oidak District are in the county. The Florence Village community is located two miles west of the town of Florence, and the majority of the Sif Oidak District falls into Pinal County.

Reservation Landmarks: The Tohono O’odham Nation houses three branches of government: Executive, Legislative and Judicial, and their programs; five recreation centers, San Simon health center, six Head Start preschools, two casinos in San Xavier District. One casino/convenient store is located on the west end of the Nation next to State Route Highway 86. A Cultural Museum, Kitt Peak Observatory, Tohono Plaza (shopping plaza), Archie Hendricks Nursing Home, and KOHN radio station are all located on the main reservation. For additional information visit the Tohono O’odham Web site at www.tonation-nsn.gov

Transportation-related highlights: The State Highway 86 Sells project was completed in 2009. The Sells project consisted of drainage, bridge reconstruction, four foot shoulders, and left and right turning lanes. Federal Route 15, funded by the BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs), has completed a 10-mile, resurfacing project and additional turning lanes. In 2009, construction will begin on BIA Route 25 and the project consists of paving an existing graded road.

Economy:  The Tohono O’odham Nation gains most of its income from its three casinos. The three casinos employ 1,200 native and non-native people. The income provides funding for the Nation’s numerous programs on the Nation and generates millions in state revenue. The Nation is the 13th largest employer in the area, representing over 2,400 jobs in Pima County.
