Census 2010 - Make your Family Count!

Census Day is April 1, 2010

A 10-question form will be mailed in March 2010

Return your form by April 1, 2010

Information on the form remains confidential

Your count ensures federal funding for police and fire protection, hospitals, schools, parks and libraries, senior centers, road and transit improvements and neighborhood improvements.

For every person counted, the Pima County region will receive approximately $1,000 per year in federal funds over the next 10 years. For a family of four counted, the region will receive $40,000 over the 10-year period.

In addition, Pima County annually receives $1,500 per capita in state-shared revenues, which are based on population.

The U.S. Census Bureau's 2010 Census Web site has information available in 59 languages and various toolkits that you may use for your target group or community.

 Did you know?

$0.42 vs. $56

The cost of obtaining a mailed-back census form (42 cents), compared with the estimated cost of obtaining a household’s census responses in person if the household doesn’t mail back the form ($56). (Note: Costs may vary depending on the number of households enumerators will have to visit.)

It costs 133 times as much to collect census information by sending a Census worker to your door than if you mail in your form.

 About Census 2010

The census is a count of everyone living in the United States every 10 years.

The census is mandated by the U.S. Constitution.

Your participation in the census is required by law.

It takes less than 10 minutes to complete.

Federal law protects the personal information you share during the census.

Census data are used to distribute Congressional seats to states, to make decisions at every level of government, and to distribute $300 billion in federal funds to communities each year.

 PAG's Census 2010 Participation

In early 2009, Pima Association of Governments completed the local Participant Statistical Areas Program (PSAP) on behalf of member agencies. This effort involved calculating population estimates for existing census tracts and block groups, reviewing the geography with respect to existing neighborhood boundaries, and splitting or merging the areas to meet specific criteria for Census 2010 geographic areas.

PAG also worked with Pima County to define the official Census Designated Places. From 2011 to 2021, the Census Bureau will use these geographies to report data from Census Bureau programs including the results of the 2010 Census and The American Community Survey.

PAG also served as a coordinator between member agencies and the Census Bureau on the Local Update of Census Addresses (LUCA) Program. This program is a decennial census geographic partnership program that allows local, state, and tribal governments to contribute local knowledge to the Bureau to develop a more accurate and complete Master Address File of each community in order to obtain an accurate and complete census count.

Complete Count Committee
PAG established a Census 2010 Complete Count Committee, which held its first official meeting on Oct. 21, 2009. The CCC has established four subcommittees: Education, Community-Based Organizations, Business and Media.

In fall 2009, the CCC and its subcommittess began to build awareness of Census 2010 with hard-to-count populations and initiated a public outreach strategy with a media campaign that will be conducted in spring 2010.
