The decennial census of population and housing is conducted once every decade in the year ending in zero. Census 2000 is the most recent census. Here are some sources fo find population and housing information from the last census and more recent information:
- Between censuses the Census Bureau issues population estimates for the United States as a whole, states,counties, cities, and metropolitan areas. Note too the estimates of the population by age, sex, race and ethnicity as well as estimates of households and housing units.
- Another source to consult is the American Community Survey (ACS), a major source for similar census-based demographic information for years between censuses. View the hundreds of tables based on this survey online in the American FactFinder.
- At the national and regional level, the Census Bureau updates the kind of data collected in the census on socioeconomic topics through several key surveys such as the Current Population Survey and the Survey of Income and Program Participation. To find updates, go to Subjects A to Z on the Census Bureau's Web site and search by topic of interest (e.g., race, income, and marital status).
- For housing data, you can consult the American Housing Survey and the Housing Vacancy and Homeownership Survey.
