  • The U.S. Small Business Administration's Office of Advocacy ranks Tucson No. 3 among mid-sized metropolitan areas for "high-impact" firms - companies that have at least doubled their sales and employment in the past four years.
  • University Medical Center is in the top 100 of the Thomson Reuters' top 100 Performance Improvement Hospitals and was one of two major teaching hospitals to show extraordinary improvements over five years.
  • Hispanic magazine placed Tucson as one of the Top 10 cities for Hispanics in 2008. For details, visit, hispanicmagazine.com.
  • The August 2008 issue of Family Circle magazine named Oro Valley one of the top 10 places in the country to raise a family. The ranking was based on home affordability, public safety, environmental protection and quality of schools.
  • Basis Charter School of Tucson was ranked No. 1 in the 2008 of the nation's top public schools conducted by Newsweek magazine. The school has locations at 3825 E. Second St. and 3434 E. Broadway. The school serves grades 5-12.
  • Fortune magazine ranked Oro Valley No. 44 on its list of "100 Best Places to Live and Launch 2008." Recognitions included that Oro Valley is an "up-and-coming" location for the biotech industry; population has grown by 25 percent since 2000, and Oro Valley has a pro-business environment.
  • Business Facilities magazine named Tucson a "up-and-coming" biotech center. The Technology Research Initiative Fund, supported by Proposition 301, is one item boosting Tucson's biotech presence as well as being home of the University of Arizona BIO5 Institute at 1657 E. Helen St.
  • Arizona is ranked 17th on the Milken Institute's 2008 State Technology and Science Index. The index looked at each state's research and development, ability to attract workers and dollar volume entrepreneurs risk spending.
  • Arizona received a No. 8 ranking of best states for doing business, based on a poll conducted by New York-based Development Counsellors International.
