TRP Company Spotlights: Tucson Jewish Community Center

Sun Rideshare has its own Rideshare Rewards program, but the Tucson Jewish Community Center has decided to take it a step further and create its own incentives program.Julia Levine, right, presents the weekly challenge winner with prizes in her classroom.

The Tucson Jewish Community Center is a 110,000-square-foot facility built in 1989 and recently renovated in 2015. With more than 5,000 members, the Tucson J is open to the Tucson community of all faiths. The center offers arts and culture, sports and wellness, and children and family programs, among other community events.

With so many community enrichment opportunities for members, Julia Levine, Tucson JCC's operations coordinator and transportation coordinator (Julia is shown in the back right of the photo, presenting the weekly challenge winner with prizes in her classroom), wanted to take that creative mindset and find fun, engaging ways to share the word about travel reduction and alternative transportation options for employees.

Levine, along with assistance from the sports and wellness team onsite, ran week-long contests at Tucson J that focused on a different alternative transportation mode each month. At the end of each week, the employee who logged the most trips in that mode won prizes, which were paid for by PAG’s incentives program. For example, during Bike-to-Work week, the employee who logged the most bike trips received a gift card to a local bike shop.  Tucson J encouraged its employees to take pictures and shared them across Facebook and Instagram.

“It was a really successful program,” Levine said. Following the contests, Tucson J nearly tripled their alternate mode usage from the previous year, according to their annual employee survey.

“[The contests] worked really well last year, and I’m looking forward to coming up with some other fun, new ways to get this program going here,” Levine said.

In addition to the contests, Tucson J sells bus passes onsite, offers bike racks, shows the “Do Zombies Carpool?” infomercial at staff meetings and new hire orientations, posts fliers and announcements, and sends regular email reminders about the Travel Reduction Program.
