 Stormwater Program

Pima Association of Governments' Stormwater Program conducts stormwater outreach activities on behalf of PAG member jurisdictions, which are represented on the Stormwater Management Working Group. Members of the Working Group also include representatives from the building and construction industry, state government, the University of Arizona and Davis Monthan Air Force Base.

The program helps jurisdictions meet Arizona Pollutant Elimination Discharge System (AZPDES) permit requirements.

In addition to the annual stormwater pollution prevention campaign, other stormwater outreach activities include an annual stormwater construction seminar.

 What is Stormwater Pollution?

During and after every heavy rainfall or storm event, surface runoff washes away loose sediment, chemicals, trash, pet waste, and every other pollutant that the rainwater can carry.

This is how surface runoff gets polluted. Polluted water is then carried downstream that ends up in desert washes or detention-retention basins, or seeps underground and adversely affects our fragile desert environment.

 Stormwater Outreach

Public
During the monsoon season when the region receives its highest amount of rainfall, we conduct an outreach campaign. The 2009 theme is "Clean Water Starts With Me." The message was marketed via bus shelters, billboards, movie theaters and television commercials.

The goal is to raise public awareness aout the problem of stormwater pollution and to inform the public about how they can help prevent it by a variety of methods, such as fixing leaky vehicles and not littering.

Construction Industry
PAG hosts an annual seminar on stormwater pollution prevention for the construction industry. The seminar features presentations by local governments and state agencies for the industry.

The seminar helps the construction industry learn about current regulatory requirements as well as about how to implement best management practices to prevent erosion and transport of soils from their sites.
