At Home

What can I do at home to reduce ozone levels?

  • Save Electricity
    • To generate electricity, utility companies produce air pollution. Reducing your usage can lower air emissions and save money. Here are some ways to cut back:
      • Replace incandescent bulbs with more energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs
      • Raise your thermostat a few degrees in the summer and lower it a few degrees in the winter
      • Turn off lights and unplug rarely used TVs, small appliances and phone chargers
      • Run full loads when using the dishwasher and washing machine
      • Purchase Energy Star appliances when possible
  • Household Products and Activities
    • Avoid solvent-based cleaning and paint products which give off polluting vapors (VOC).
    • Use water-based paints, stains and sealants
    • Use a brush or roller to apply paint; sprayers usually contain polluting solvents
    • Reduce, reuse and recycle wastes
  • Outdoor Activities
    • Delay mowing until evening
    • Opt for electric or push lawn mowers to avoid fuel combustion emissions
    • Use a rake or an electric leaf blower to clean up yard waste
    • Plant native trees and grasses which require less water and maintenance
    • Barbecue using a gas grill. For charcoal grills, use an electric starter or charcoal chimney instead of lighter fluid
