Sun Shuttle operates in neighborhoods, connect with Sun Tran services
The expansion of regional transit service started May 4
with the introduction of neighborhood circulator transit service in Marana, Oro Valley, Catalina, Sahuarita and Green Valley.
“This is a big step forward in moving toward a regional seamless transit system,” said Marana Mayor Ed Honea, who is also chairman of the Regional Transportation Authority. “People will be able to connect from one transit system to another and people will be able to link to such places as shopping destinations, libraries or medical facilities.”
Following a free introductury period, the Sun Shuttle one-way cash fare is $1 as of June 1. Passengers transferring to connecting Sun Shuttle routes can do so
for free. An additional fare will be collected when people transfer to Sun Tran or Sun Express.
Each community will have designated routes and stops with service on Mondays through Saturdays. In designated safe areas along some of the routes, people may flag down the shuttles if they want to be picked up. The Sun Shuttles will stay within each of the communities and riders will be able to connect to other Sun Tran services and travel across the region with transfers to the fared-based services of Sun Tran and Sun Expres
s.
“This new service provides Oro Valley residents many options in transit and we believe that this service will be used regularly by many people,” said Oro Valley Mayor Paul Loomis and RTA Board member.
Sahuarita Mayor Lynne Skelton and RTA Board member said she anticipates that residents in her community will appreciate this new service. “As our community continues to grow, people are seeking more options
on getting around within the community and also connecting to the metro Tucson area,” she said.
Dick Roberts, Chair of the Green Valley/Sahuarita Transit Committee of the Green Valley Community Coordinating Council, said Green Valley residents need a variety of transit options as they become more dependent on transit service. “This expansion of service will make life easier for many of our residents,” he said.
Nearly $25 million has been set aside within the RTA plan to fund circulator service over the 20-year life of the plan.
The RTA has contracted with MV Transportation to provide the circulator service. The RTA coordinated with jurisdictional staff to collect community input that helped determine routes and schedules. The routes and schedule information is now available at various locations throughout each community. Information about the neighborhood circulator service also is available on Sun Tran’s Web site, www.suntran.com, and through a centralized customer service information center. The number for customer service information is (520) 792-9222.
