Trends in managing your travel

Whether you carpool, ride the bus or bike to work, new mobile phone apps and other innovations are here to put more ease into your everyday travel. Sun Rideshare, a program of Pima Association of Governments (PAG), can help you decide what options are best for you. For starters, here's an update on a few travel tools available to you in the region:

Sun Tran, the City of Tucson's mass transit service, and the Sun Link streetcar offer mobile apps to track your bus or streetcar, purchase transit fares or pay for parking online.

Sun Rideshare will soon update its online interactive carpool matching system to help you quickly and more easily find a carpool partner. Sun Rideshare and PAG's Travel Reduction Program are travel demand strategies that encourage the use of alternative modes of travel to help reduce congestion, improve air quality and reduce energy consumption in the region.

PAG and its members, including local governments, work to achieve these goals for a better lifestyle for everyone by providing multiple mode choices that are reliable, convenient and affordable.

Bikesharing, another alternative mode concept used elsewhere around the world and other cities, will arrive in Tucson later this year. Bikes that will be available through a rental program can be used in central Tucson to get to work, do some shopping or simply take a spin on The Loop. Various mobile apps are available to help bike riders map their route, track their mileage and calories, or log their trips.

Another travel management option is teleworking, or working from home. Nationally, teleworking has grown 103 percent since 2005. In Tucson, 32.7 percent of major employers offer telework options to their employees at least one day a week compared to 17.5 percent in 2009.

The potential to travel more seamlessly, save money and live better is at your fingertips. Visit www.SunRideshare.org to discover what works best for your lifestyle.

TRP Employer Spotlight

C3 Transportation Coordinator Crystal Mendoza and C3 employee Anthony Dubose

C3/Customer Contact Channels, an employer in Pima Association of Governments' Travel Reduction Program, is one of Tucson's fastest growing companies with over 1,800 employees. C3, which has three Tucson locations at Drexel, Foothills Mall, and Speedway and Kolb, handles customer service, tech support and billing inquiries for several major healthcare companies and other large companies.

In the four years C3 has participated in the Travel Reduction Program, it has continued to improve its TRP employee survey participation and alternative mode usage, now at 40 percent. Carpooling is the most popular travel mode among employees. Most recently, the main C3 location earned the program's only Gold award of 2016 for achieving three TRP goals. The Foothills Mall location earned a Silver award for achieving two TRP goals.

Crystal Mendoza, the Transportation Coordinator, worked directly with the department supervisors to help the company achieve a 60 percent response rate on the TRP employee survey. Mendoza attributes the high use of alternative modes to all sites located near Sun Tran service and The Loop bike path, a compressed work week/flexible schedule options offered to employees and educational support she provides to employees who need transportation assistance.

A new employee, Anthony Dubose, starts his job later in the morning which allows him to ride the bus to work. He listens to music in a comfortable bus, so a transfer at Laos that adds a little time to his commute does not deter him from this option. While riding the bus, Dubose also has made new friends and met other C3 employees. He even has used his customer service skills to make riding the bus a more enjoyable experience for others by helping them find their bus connections at the Laos Transit Center.

Contact your TRP transportation coordinator today to learn more about the benefits of signing up with the Sun Rideshare program.
