Economic Vitality Advisory Committee

The PAG Economic Vitality Advisory Committee, established in early 2014, works to identify ways to align the region’s transportation planning efforts with economic development opportunities. The committee, which has a transportation emphasis, explores various topics of regional significance that affect the community’s economic vitality, such as land use, tourism and trade, to evaluate how transportation projects and policies influence economic development outcomes.

Committee members are representatives of PAG-member jurisdictions, including city and town managers, as well as representatives of higher education institutions and economic development-focused organizations. Tom McGovern, a Tucson Metro Chamber board member, currently chairs the committee and Lea Márquez Peterson, president of the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, serves as the vice chair. The committee meets quarterly following PAG Management Committee meetings.

PAG, which functions as a council of governments, also is a federally mandated metropolitan planning organization. Metropolitan transportation planning efforts must include strategies that support economic vitality of the metropolitan area, especially those that enable global competitiveness, productivity and efficiency.

Economic Vitality Links

The Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), in collaboration with the Arizona Commerce Authority, Arizona Mexico Commission, Canada Arizona Business Council and other strategic partners, recently launched a new website,, the first-of-its-kind website to link businesses across international boundaries in Arizona, Canada and Mexico.

BIEN, which means “good” in Spanish and French, stands for Building an International Economic Network. Companies can post their company profiles so that other businesses searching the site can see what is offered and find ways to collaborate. BIEN uses an e-platform to link individual businesses, improve cross-border freight and trade opportunities, and help businesses connect to their supply chain and distribution networks in the trade region.
