Sustainable Use of Local Water Resources (WATER)
As a region, we have a limited water supply. What can we do as individuals to lower the amount of water we are using on a daily basis? What can our neighborhood do to help conserve water resources?
Protection, Enhancement, Creation of Urban Green Assets (URBAN GREEN)
Urban Green Assets include parks for recreation, nature parks, trails, gardens, and open space. Green assets can help mitigate the urban heat island effect, foster transportation alternatives, and reduce energy costs. How do we protect and enhance the City’s green assets? How can an individual or a neighborhood create green assets?
Minimizing Waste to Landfills (WASTE)
Waste reduction extends the life of our landfills so we don’t have to look for additional land to manage our waste and helps to reduce the energy costs associated with waste management. Recycling also preserves resources that would otherwise be used to create products that can now be manufactured with used goods. What can we do as individuals or as a neighborhood to reduce the amount of waste we are generating and sending to our landfills?
Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG)
Over 7 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions are produced annually in the Tucson area related to electricity demand and use (57% of total ghg emissions). Over 3 million tons were produced from the burning of transportation fuels. These emissions will have an increasing impact on our quality of life, economy, air quality and climate. What can individuals and neighborhoods do to reduce energy use? How can we encourage the use of transportation alternatives?
Promoting Individual Well-Being and Opportunity (PEOPLE)
A sustainable community provides individuals with the ability to meet their basic needs, as well as aspire to their full potential. This includes providing individuals with access to a high-quality education, economic opportunities, health care, recreational programs, and affordable housing. What can individuals and neighborhoods do to enhance the quality-of-life and opportunities available in our community?
Strengthening Neighborhoods (NEIGHBORHOODS)
Strong neighborhoods share many attributes: residents know and care about one another, they feel safe and secure, there is a strong “sense of place” or neighborhood identity, they are pedestrian and bicycle- friendly, they offer convenient access to essential services and public amenities, and they feature common gathering spots where residents can relax, recreate and visit. How can we make our neighborhoods the best places to live?
Creating Community (COMMUNITY)
Community begins with respect and fair treatment for each and every member. Strong communities also foster a “spirit of place” that respects cultural heritage and traditions, and celebrates richness and diversity. What can we do as individuals, neighborhoods, and members of community organizations to create a strong sense of community?
Working Together (COLLABORATION)
Creating a sustainable community requires collaboration between individuals, neighborhoods, organizations, government and the University. How can we bring our community’s resources together and build networks.
